Alle packen an! / Helping hands

british-flag.jpg Last year three enthusiastic British volunteers from Barnard Castle and Duchess High Schools in England – Fred, Kyle, Kate and Lizzie – had a wonderful idea: they raised a heap of money through their own efforts and came out to Kenya during their gap year to build a little volunteer’s house right next to the Nest compound. What a big help! Now we can offer our volunteers some basic housing space where they can have some privacy after a long day’s work helping out at The Nest.

At the moment we are having seven volunteers from overseas living in our new volunteer’s house. Last week they all got together and helped clean up the building site and also worked on some renovations after the walls of the new house had gotten very wet soon after the completion of the building. The interior is now damp and mouldy and the volunteers are trying to work on that. Since there were not enough buckets the kids used plastic bags and little pails to carry the soil from one end to another! Everyone helped and at the end of the day especially the younger children were very happy that they had engaged in this kind of work that usually only grown-ups do!

Paul’s new Family

Filed under: Info, News — MB at 1:46 pm on Tuesday, January 12, 2010

british-flag.jpg Yesterday we received a happy and very kind letter and some pictures from one of our adoptive parents. Their new son, Paul, had been with us for a long time and we loved him dearly. We are happy that he has such a loving family now. Here is what they write:

Dear friends at the Nest Halfway House,

We are at home in the Netherlands for 4 weeks now. For Paul it is the first month in his new home, far away from the place where he was born.
He enjoys the snow, although running and playing outside is a little bit difficult with all these clothes on, and so is sucking your thumb when you wear gloves!
Many times we think and talk about the seven months we spent in Kenya. For us it was the greatest gift ever to become the Mom and Dad of Paul. Words can never express how gratefull we are to the Nest Halfway House, where Paul lived until may 27th, 2009.
‘This is the day that The Lord has made, let us rejoice and be glad in it’ was one of the songs that you sang for Paul and us on that day we celebrated Paul’s new family. We will never forget it, and ‘asante sana’, Irene, all your staff and friends of The Nest, for being there for these children, for being strong and persistent to keep them safe. You make the difference. God bless you!

Christmas at The Nest

Filed under: Info — MB at 4:06 pm on Tuesday, December 29, 2009

This Christmas was full of blessings! We were blessed with wonderful support from all kinds of people! Isn’t the greatest gift of all gifts “the gift of love”?! We really felt it this Christmas. Thank you to all those angels who made it  happen.

First, we got chicken from Kenchich for all children donated! So the kids had a very special meal of chicken and chapati on Christmas Day. All the staff at The Nest helped to make the chapati – it took hours and hours. What a great gift of love!Kenya_2009_12_25_1104

One of our friends – Michaela and her Dad – helped to buy an apple for every child! What a special treat!

With the help of Michaela, her Dad and CIC Nairobi every child also received an individual Christmas gift! The kids had drawn wrapping paper for each other with the name of a child on every gift. That way each of the kids also had something to share with another child. They were so proud of their beautiful drawings!

The staff at The Nest also received a small gift. The volunteers and kids at The Nest had put small things for them in a Christmas stocking during the days before Christmas. Some of the kids wrote “thank you notes” to give to the staff.  What a nice gift of appreciation!

Our volunteers – Katrin and Susanne – at The Nest also helped make the day a success. Here they are with their Christmas gift: a gift voucher for allowing them to wash their laundry in a washing machine (the usual way of washing is by hand)

Last but most important – Irene told the kids the story of Christmas. Although most of the kids have heard the story many times before they listen quietly and enjoy the wonder of Christmas.

What a blessed Christmas!
