Our little baby Hope recently received a present from her friend in Norway. She enjoyed opening her gift with just a little help from Betty! What a lovely surprise! Happy Hope says thank you!

Hope says: “I need some help!”

School!/ Schule!

Let’s go to school! Every morning the gate of our new schoolhouse opens up widely to let in all our school aged children. Finally they can go “out of the home’s compound and into the school’s compound”! What a joy!
Jeden Morgen öffnen sich die Tore unseres neuen Schulhauses und die Kinder werden willkommen geheißen. Endlich haben die Kinder einen “richtigen” Schulweg: hinaus aus den Toren des Kinderheims und hinein in das Schulgelände. Hurra!

And during recess let’s run outside and play a game of soccer!

For those of you who think that it never gets cold in Limuru: sorry, you are wrong At about 7000 feet altitude Limuru can be quite chilly and windy at times. For that reason the kids at The Nest where very excited about the gifts they got from American friends of The Nest. Look at the big guys with their new warm hats on:

Njuguna’s cars/ Njugunas Autos

Njuguna is really good at making his own cars out of wire. But more than that, his ability and creativity gives him a feeling of confidence after all the hardship he has had to experience in his short life. Many children at the Nest arrive at the Nest traumatized and sad. At the Nest they learn to laugh again. Look at the sparkle in his eyes!

Njuguna ist unglaublich geschickt im Basteln, am liebsten Autos aus Draht. Darauf ist er stolz, doch vielmehr schenkt im diese Freude am Basteln neues Selbstbewusstsein nach einem schweren Schicksal. Viele Kinder kommen traumatisiert ins Nest. Es kann dauern, bis sie das Lachen wieder lernen… Seht euch das Leuchten in Njugunas Augen an!

Sausages / Würstchen

All over Kenya in little towns and villages you find a local sausage seller. So it is in Limuru – the town where The Nest is located – just a little town northwest of the capital city Nairobi. Once upon a time there were 3 British volunteers at The Nest who thought they would like to surprise the kids at The Nest with a unique idea. It was during Easter time and they felt they would like to offer something special with the little money they have themselves. So they drove downhill to Limuru town and convinced a local sausage seller to board their mini-bus with his sausage trolley alltogether. The man smelled business and agreed to the deal. Indeed! That day he actually sold 60 sausages in 5 minutes! And the kids at The Nest? They were as happy as could be!

In den Kleinstädten und Dörfern Kenias gibt es meist einen lokalen Würstchen- Verkäufer, der sich einen Lebensunterhalt durch den Verkauf am Straßenrand verdient. So auch in Limuru – wo sich nur unweit entfernt oben am Hügel das Nest Kinderheim befindet. Nun geschah es, dass unsere derzeitigen freiwilligen Helfer aus England, den Kinder zu Ostern eine Freude bereiten wollten. Sie fuhren also in das Dorf hinunter, packten den Wurst Verkäufer samt Wägelchen in ihren Minibus ein (dieser zeigte sich verwundert jedoch bereitwillig!) und fuhren wieder den steilen Weg ins Nest hinauf. Der Verkäufer staunte nicht schlecht, als er an diesem Tag ganze 60 Würstchen in 5 min. verkauften. Und die Kinder hatten ihre helle Freude!

Napping / Mittagsschlaf

Nach dem Mittagessen legen sich die kleineren Nestlinge täglich ein Stündchen aufs Ohr. Wenn das meist sehr frische Limuru-Wetter es erlaubt, dann liegen sie am Liebsten im Freien… die frische Brise in Limuru lässt die Höhe von fast 2000m erahnen… Und für den Notfall steht das Töpfchen gleich bereit!

After lunch the little kids at The Nest take a little nap – either indoors or outdoors if the breezy climate in Limuru allows (altitude of about 6500 feet). And for emergency cases – there is always a potty nearby!

A visitor/ Besuch im Nest

After all the recent sad news from Kenya we would like to show you what lights up our days… our babies are growing and getting bigger and beautiful with every new day. Some of them have already found a new home. They are all safe, have enough milk and a warm bed. And sometimes they even get visitors like this little guy!

Trotz all den traurigen Ereignissen, die wir aus Kenya berichten müssen, sind wir froh davon erzählen zu können, dass wir unseren Schützlinge dank unseres Miteinanders ein warmes Bett, genug Milch und viel Liebe geben können. Es geht ihnen gut! Sie wachsen und gedeihen! Und manchmal bekommen sie sogar Besuch!

Faces tell stories / Gesichter erzählen

In our brochure about The Nest we write: “Many children come to The Nest traumatized, after experiencing crime or abuse and the arrest of and separation from their mothers.” Not words, but the faces of these children tell us their story.

In unserem Flyer schreiben wir über das Nest: “Viele Kinder kommen in einem gesundheitlich bedrohlichen Zustand ins Nest und meist auch schwer traumatisiert.” Meist keine Worte, sondern die Gesichter dieser Kinder erzählen uns ihre Geschichte.

Dreams come true/Träume werden wahr

Four-year old litte girls have dreams. Even if they have been living in a children’s home for years. Like Jirani. She has been living at The Nest much of her life. All this time she has been “one out of many” longing for the little attention the housemothers can give her. One of the greatest dreams she’s been having is to get a fancy hairstyle. Recently one the housemothers made her dream come true by dedicating precious extra time. Well, there is one happy girl out there…

Kleine vier-jährige Mädchen haben Träume. Auch wenn sie in einem Kinderheim leben. Jirani hat den Großteil ihres Lebens im Nest verbracht. Sie ist es gewohnt “eine unter vielen” zu sein. Einer ihrer grössten Träume war es einmal eine neue Frisur zu bekommen. Für solche “Extra-Wünsche” haben die Hausmütter gewöhnlich keine Zeit. Doch diesmal hat Hausmutter Agnes sich in ihrer freien Zeit ein Herz gefasst und Jirani die grösste Freude bereitet.
