Both leading Kenyan daily newspapers “The Daily Nation” and “The East African Standard” have been reporting about the drastic increase in commodity prices in Kenya, HERE and HERE (click to read the articles). Especially prices for vegetables and fuel have increased due to scarcity blamed on post-election violence. For example the price of cabbage and potatoes has increased by up to 426% during the past two months! So have maize, rice, cooking fat and sugar. “The Daily Nation” quotes a woman saying: “The situation facing us is really bad. Prices of all essential commodities are going up every month. I don’t know where we poor people are headed if this continues.”

Beide kenianischen Tageszeitungen berichten seit Wochen über den Anstieg der Preise für Nahrungsmittel und Dienstleistungen. Insbesondere die Preise für Gemüse und Benzin sind derart in die Höhe geschnellt, dass arme Menschen kaum mehr über die Runden kommen. Die Situation wird den niedrigen Nachschub im Anschluss an die Gewaltausbrüche im Land zugeschrieben. Die Preise für Kohl und Kartoffeln beispielsweise sind in den letzten Monaten um bis 426% gestiegen! Auch der Preis für das Grundnahrungsmittel Mais, außerdem Reis, Zucker und Fett hat sich drastisch erhöht. Vor allem die armen Menschen in Kenya nimmt der Preisanstieg besonders mit.

Obviously we also get to feel the price increase for food supply for The Nest. It’s a big challenge we are facing at the moment. Providing healthy and nutritious – yet very basic food for 80 kids and staff at The Nest costs about slightly over 2000 US$ per month. Inflation and fluctuating prices create a huge challenge for us at the moment.

Wir spüren den Preisanstieg besonders beim Einkauf der Grundnahrungsmittel zur Versorgung der Kinder im Nest. Die Ausgaben für ausgewogene und gesunde Ernährung der Kinder und Mitarbeiter belaufen sich derzeit auf knapp 1500 Euro jeden Monat. Inflation und hohe Preisschwankungen machen uns im Moment sehr zu schaffen…
